Meaningful Month

Opening Day is a month away today
Groundskeepers rake the honorable clay
Nine fit figures form shiny silhouettes
They symbolize summer’s returning roulette
Clean lineup cards wait to be marked with led
The scribbled smears show smatterings of what goes unsaid

A pitcher fires a flaming fastball that careens into the dust
Chalk from the sand puffs up and covers the plate like crust
The batter protects the patina with an ambitious swing
His hands and head have only a moment’s time to turn, twist and wring
The defense deciphers the direction of the bouncing ball
It spirals swiftly as the fielder flicks it to first and waits for the call

The innings pass by and the scoreboard stands straight
Fans linger in the stands, on the benches and at the gate
Baseball hats are replaced by harder versions after each frame
Players rest and redeem themselves tranquilly in the dugout during the game
Fair or foul is a matter of inches, adding nuisances notching the play
Opening Day is a month away today
